Spelling at Highlees

At Highlees, we firmly believe spelling is a fundamental literacy skill that enables children to develop strong writing skills as they grow. We use the Twinkl Planit spelling scheme to ensure coverage and progression in key spelling rules and patterns. Alongside this, we ensure the children are taught key topic related vocabulary linked to other areas of the curriculum and encourage pupils to use word banks and dictionaries to self and peer assess and edit their writing. 

We particularly want the children to develop a love of language and the confidence to spell more challenging and ambitious words. Each classroom has a 'Words to Investigate' board which supports in the ambitious vocabulary we promote to all, within our school.
